About “don’t look at me” album :
“Most albums are there to tell stories. In ‘Don’t Look At Me”, I wanted to do what I like the most since I was a kid, which is to make playlists, with music of different styles but which are just as much linked. This new album, I really see it as a kind of playlist, with the music I like best from the last few years. ‘Playlist’ could very well have been the title of the album.
Some tracks are going to be four years old, others less than a year old. In the meantime, I released an EP, ‘I Need Space’, but with the idea in the back of my mind to wait until this album is ready. A lot of the tracks that were selected for the project are not anymore, and the fact that I’ve listened to this one so many times reassures me that the tracks can live on. I’m still not disgusted when I listen to them, and everyone knows that listening to a song over and over is likely to make you disgusted. A bit like the music we sacrificed for our alarm clock.
I’m quite proud of the project, which I consider a bit like an all-in. I put a little bit of myself into it, for one last shot. If the project didn’t work out, I’d still be pretty happy to have released something like this. It took a lot of effort and a lot of patience, but it was worth it.
‘Don’t Look At Me’ also marks the first real project for me with sample-free productions. I come from sampling, and I always thought I could only do that. It was quite scary, I had the feeling of being blocked and not being able to move forward. Already, in ‘I need space’, I had tried to start this trend that I intend to support on this project. There are still some samples on some tracks, but most of the album is full compo, even pushing the song sometimes.
So it’s a kind of transition album, with a new Mounika., that I want to make discover. This transition is accompanied by the visual of the project. The black and white photo follows almost all the releases for ten years now. I want to propose something else. As much for the listening as for the looking, with the appearance of drawings, colors… and the two characters who now accompany the project, Carl & TJ. Being a big fan of comics and graphic novels, there is a real will to add drawing in the project. To offer people a little more than just music, by offering them visual stories. Carl & TJ were born from a collaboration with Joe Taylor from Berlin. It’s a bit like a Calvin & Hobbs, music version or a more electronic ‘Lord Quas’ from Quasimoto.
The project took a long time to finalize, it has the image of a kind of diary. I don’t know when I made this or that track. Some in a more than negative mood, some when I came back from a party with one too many drinks, some during insomnia, etc. I hope that the listeners will listen to them this way too.
‘Little Love’ is the track that links the old tracks of Mounika., it will reassure people who will say ‘I preferred before’. A small favorite on the voice of the singer, which, modified, really resonates in a certain way and did not leave me indifferent. ‘Nomadics’ will perhaps be the most surprising track for people who follow the project for a while, much more electronic, while keeping the loop of a sample. Can’t wait to rock it live and get the feedback from the audience. ‘I Looked Into Her Eyes’ was a real crush when I heard the original, in the ‘It’s Bruno’ series. When I heard that it was a recent project, I immediately wanted to rework the track. It’s a great sample and I wish everyone to discover this project, Ural Thomas & the Pain. He has an incredible voice.
‘BonXair’ is the transition track for me, it’s very important to me because it connects the tracks together, and manages to have a function more than just a transition track. When the drums come in, it gives it a “without drums it’s cool, with drums it’s just as cool” feel. It is short enough that the listener wants to listen to it again if needed.
‘Memories’ is my favorite thing about working with Lord Apex. It’s a project I’ve been following for a while, he’s super talented. I had sent him a production, he had done the job, but the production was not going to work. It had not passed the stage of “in the long term, it is still listened? I had to do a new production, which I much prefer to the first one.
I know I’ll have to describe the style of the project…. I might as well say, electronic. But I still have an attachment to trip-hop that I’ve been rocking since I was a kid.
You have to notice all the winks in the project, to Moby, Ratatat, Air or even Bonobo, just to name a few. I try to pay tribute to them in my own way. Without them, I would never have put my nose in music, I might as well say that without them I wouldn’t have done much in my life, haha.
I’m getting closer to 30, I hope to do more mature music, while continuing to do kid’s shit.”

Summary: “Look At Me: XXXTENTACION” tries to thread a needle, celebrating the talent of the late musical star, who was murdered at age 20, and addressing his mental-health issues while acknowledging allegations of domestic violence. Produced by his mother and his manager, the result is an awkward construct that doesn’t overlook his violent behavior but occasionally downplays it.
