Amazon Prime Day 2023: Everything we know so far

Amazon’s shopping holiday has become one of the biggest events of the summer, especially now that Prime Day has gone back to July as the unofficial kickoff of Back To School sale season. If you’re not familiar, Amazon Prime Day is a two-day online shopping bonanza where the online giant unleashes millions of deals for Amazon Prime subscribers. Everything from cases to clothes to computers to cars, there’s usually a deal on it during Prime Day.

Prime Day isn’t even limited to Amazon anymore; most other online retailers offer deep discounts during the event to try and lure shoppers in while their wallets are open. Even items that aren’t generally sold on Amazon are primed for a price cut as the entire e-commerce world gets in on the frugal free-for-all.

When is Amazon Prime Day?

We don’t know, but we should have a ballpark by the end of the month. For the last two years, Amazon has shared the general timeframe of Prime Day during their first fiscal quarter investor announcements. In 2021, they said it would be “later in Q2”, which meant June, and last year they said, “Prime Day will take place in July in more than 20 countries.” It’s only mid-April, so expect to hear more on Prime Day at the end of this month or very beginning of May by the latest.

Last year, Amazon Prime Day was July 12-13, 2022, and we expect it to be in July once again, but it’s not a 100% guarantee. From 2015 through 2019, Amazon Prime Day took place in mid-July, but the pandemic in 2020 caused the event to shift. Amazon Prime Day 2020 took place October 13-14, 2020 after the pandemic and a global shipping crisis left supply in a stranglehold that summer — and it was June 21-22, 2021 the following year.

2022 was the first return to a July Prime Day — though Amazon held a smaller Prime Day-type event October 11-12, 2022 called Amazon Prime Early Access. While Prime Day initially started in the United States, it was run in 20 countries last year with over 2 million deals. That’s a lot of discounts to dig through, but like history, Prime Day deals don’t repeat: they rhyme.

What deals do we expect on Amazon Prime Day?

Pretty much everything on Amazon gets some kind of discount during or around Prime Day. Android phones and accessories of every flavor will see discounts, as will smart TVs, tablets, computer accessories, and, of course, computers themselves. Prime Day has traditionally been a great time to grab a Chromebook as Amazon targets parents needing something for their children to do homework on that won’t break the bank — or break under a little abuse.

Summer is the smartphone doldrums between the spring launches and the fall launches, so if you know what you’re looking for, chances are you’ll find a good deal on it come Prime Day. We’ve already seen Amazon knock hundreds off the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, and we expect to see it again for Prime Day, as well as deeper discounts for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 ahead of their successors. Samsung tends to hold an Unpacked event for its foldables and wearables in August, so that makes Prime Day an excellent time to get a foldable phone for a fair price before the newest bleeding edge generation arrives.

Speaking of Samsung, since it has announced new watches in August the last two years, Prime Day 2023 will likely be a great time to grab a Galaxy Watch 5 — especially since its seen few discounts above the $30-$50 mark. During Black Friday, the Galaxy Watch 4 fell all the way to $140, and if we’re lucky, maybe the Galaxy Watch 5 will dip below $200. At the very least, we can count on a decent discount on Galaxy Watches, as the Pixel Watch’s deals have been fewer and much further between.

Smart home products seem to constantly get sales, but the best of the bunch will be getting some more serious discounts. Philips Hue usually has some decent bundles around sales holidays, and Google’s Nest line similarly sees discounts on both bundles and individual items. The much-preferred wired version of the Nest Doorbell (2nd Gen) is one to keep an eye on, although you can absolutely count on every Ring and Blink camera available seeing a sale.

While we may not see huge deals on the PS5 or Xbox Series X, deals on games for both of these platforms — as well as Switch and PC — should be big. And microSD cards reach ludicrously low prices, and whether you need one for your Switch, your dashcam, your phone, or for an actual camera, you’ll probably want to pick one up. All manner of indoor/outdoor security cameras are also likely to go on sale.

Of course, there will be hundreds of thousands of sales on things from clothing to chargers to coolers, but we’re an Android site, so we’ll be rounding up all the tech deals you need to see. From stupid low prices on USB-C cables to lightning deals on 4K TVs, we’ll be combing through them all.

You can sign up for a free Amazon Prime trial around the event and still get access to the deals. Just be sure to set a reminder to then cancel your Prime membership once the event is over and your packages have arrived — or maybe you’ll decide to keep it.
